Holy Grail: The record that launched The Beatles

holyinline1.png

The ‘Holy Grail’ record that launched The Beatles has gone on display at The Beatles Story today. The unique acetate record was presented to George Martin by Brian Epstein exactly 55 years ago, on February 13th 1962, in a desperate attempt to get the band a recording contract. It features the recording of ‘Hello Little Girl’ on one side and ‘Til There Was You’ on the other.

The acetate features the handwriting of Brian Epstein, who had the disc cut in the Personal Recording Department of the HMV record store on Oxford St in London. It was cut using The Beatles’ Decca audition tapes before being presented to George Martin of EMI. Despite Martin’s initial reticence, the disc eventually led to the breakthrough the band were looking for.

In his book Tune In, leading Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn said of the disc: “Its uniqueness is enhanced by Brian Epstein’s handwriting on the labels, and the recognition of what it led to – making it one of the rarest and most collectible of all Beatles records.”

According to Ian Shirley, Rare Record Price Guide Editor: “This is one of those Holy Grail items like the original Quarrymen acetate that the band recorded themselves. This acetate is a unique item that, in many respects, helped Brian Epstein to start the ball rolling to world domination.” The disc goes on display today (13 Feb) at the award-winning Liverpool attraction and will be available to view for the next three years.

A very young Beatles fan watches The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, 9 February 1964.

“When we got on the train, the press told us why we got such a great reception in New York. They said, ‘Ah, we came to kill you, but you gave as good as you got and we love that.’ They has come to shoot us down and has an attitude of shouting at us, but ‘Hey! We’re from Liverpool! We shout back!’ They couldn’t believe that this band had come over and were shouting at them! That’s how they came to love us when they’d actually come out to nail us. Besides, we did have a number one and we were doing The Ed Sullivan Show, so that helped. But our attitudes were sort of similar and that’s how we became friends with everybody.”

The Beatles were joined by friend and keyboardist Billy Preston for an impromptu concert lasting 42 minutes. The Beatles and Preston played nine takes of five songs before being approached by the Metropolitan Police Service to turn the volume down.

It was so cold on the Apple rooftop that John Lennon was forced to borrow Yoko’s fur coat, while Ringo Starr wore his wife Maureen’s jacket.

Footage from the rooftop concert was later used in the Let It Be documentary, while several of the performances were released on subsequent Beatles’ albums including: Let It Be, Anthology 3 and Let It Be… Naked.
