John Lennon’s loo fetches £9,500 at auction for Beatles fans

Overseas buyer splashes out for toilet Lennon told builder to use as ‘a plant pot’

A porcelain lavatory which John Lennon told a builder to use as a “plant pot” has fetched £9,500 – nearly 10 times its guide price – at an auction today.

The loo was used by the music legend when he lived at Tittenhurst Park in Berkshire between 1969 and 1972.

Lennon told builder John Hancock to keep it and “use it as a plant pot”, after he installed a new one.

The toilet was stored in a shed at Mr Hancock’s home for 40 years until he died recently.

It was expected to fetch only £1,000 at the auction at the 33rd annual Beatles Convention in Liverpool today. But an overseas investor forked out £9,500 for it.

Auction organiser and Beatles expert Stephen Bailey said: “It is unbelievable. We had bids coming in from all over the place but it went to a private overseas buyer.”

The loo was among the highlights of the auction of Beatles memorabilia.

Also up for grabs was a rare mono-sound copy of Two Virgins, which Lennon recorded with wife Yoko Ono. It was expected to fetch at least £2,500.

When the LP was released in November 1968, it was sold in brown paper bags as the sleeve controversially featured a naked picture of the famous couple.

A limited release of 5,000 stereo versions of the album were available in shops, but fans had to write to the record label to purchase a mono copy of the record.

The exact number of mono copies sold is unknown. However, organisers say it is likely to be as few as a “couple of hundred”.

The cover photo for “Double Fantasy Stripped Down,” to be released Oct. 5, is now on Amazon.com. The new release will pair new versions of the album songs with Lennon’s original remastered mix of the album.

“‘Double Fantasy Stripped Down’ really allows us to focus our attention on John’s amazing vocals. Technology has advanced so much that, conversely, I wanted to use new techniques to really frame these amazing songs and John’s voice as simply as possible,” Yoko Ono said in a statement announcing the Lennon remasters. “By stripping down some of the instrumentation the power of the songs shines through with an enhanced clarity. ‘Double Fantasy Stripped Down’ will be complemented by the original album in the 2CD format. It was whilst working on the new version of this album that I was hit hardest emotionally, as this was the last album John released before his passing.”

Backers try to raise money through the internet to fund Beatle promoter’s film biography

The man who brought the Beatles to America, music promoter Sid Bernstein, is now the center of a social media campaign to help bring his story to the screen. The makers of Bernstein’s biopic, “Sid Bernstein Presents…”, have teamed with social media fundraising site Kickstarter.com to raise money to get the film released.

“Sid Bernstein Presents…” is a 110 minute documentary film on the life of Bernstein, who, in addition to bringing the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to America and promoted the Beatles Shea Stadium concert, also figured in the careers of James Brown, Tito Puente, the Rascals, Duke Ellington, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, ABBA and organized concerts with Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix and Frank Sinatra. The film features interviews with Shirley McClaine, Lenny Kravitz, the Rascals, the Moody Blues, Paul Anka, Steve Van Zandt, Dick Clark and Jerry Vale, plus the last film interviews with James Brown and Tito Puente.

The Kickstarter.com campaign for the film is trying to raise $100,000 for the music and film rights needed to get the film released. “Sid has done so much for music and public culture,” said the film’s co-director Jason Ressler. “The fact that his contribution to history is slowly being buried and forgotten is tragic. It’s our turn to fight for Sid, since he spent so much of his life fighting for a free and equal culture in America.”

The campaign will honor donors who give $30 with a pre-release Collectors Edition DVD of the film. Donors who give $100 will receive a limited edition poster signed by Bernstein. Digital distribution producer and associate producer credits will also be given to certain donors.

“Sid was doing what the Kennedys and Martin Luther King discovered later, but Sid had already begun to do it through music,” James Brown says in an exclusive, never-before-seen interview in the film. The Huffington Post also called Sid a “Founding Father” of modern music and pop culture. The Sid Bernstein site on Kickstarter.com. source

Exclusive Macca Interview!

macca_exclusive.jpg

Paul McCartney has revealed how Beatlesdrummer Ringo Starr delivered him a letter in March 1970, co-signed by George Harrisonand John Lennon, asking him to postpone the release of his solo debut album so it wouldn’t clash with the scheduled emergence of climactic Beatle release, Let It Be.

Into an atmosphere of mounting mistrust between the still technically united Beatles, Ringo’s missive dropped like an H-bomb.

“I told him top eff off,” Macca reveals toMOJO’s Tom Doyle, as he sketches out his state of mind at the fag end of The Beatles’ reign, belaboured by anxiety attacks, heavy drinking and marijuana sessions. “He seems to be going strange,” said Ringo at the time. “Everyone was completely treating me like dirt,” says McCartney today.
